Association of tobacco use, betel consumption and gastric cancer in Mizoram

Title: Association of tobacco use, betel consumption and gastric cancer in Mizoram
Abstract: Cancer is a disease that affects the livelihood of humankind for ages. Dietary habit and lifestyle
have been attributed to the development of many forms of cancer including gastric cancer. The
state of Mizoram located in the northeastern India has been recorded to be a cancer prone area.
Most Mizo people indulge in the use of smoke and smokeless tobacco and betel chewing. A study
in this high cancer incidence zone is necessary to determine the actual cause of the disease. In this
study, we evaluate the influence of tobacco use and betel consumption on gastric cancer. We conclude that individuals with a family history of cancer who consumed betel, smoke and smokeless
tobacco have a higher risk of gastric cancer. We also found an association between increased risk
of gastric cancer and consumption of betel or sahdah alone and betel with sahdah

Title: Model of Transmission Dynamicsof COVID-19 including Natural Birth Rateand considering the Differencein Death Ratesof Uninfectedand Infected Population
Authors: Lalpawimawha
Abstract: We have presented a mathematical model using Ordinary Differential
Equations to investigate the transmission of COVID-19. We included the parameter for
the natural birth rate of the susceptibles, considering the fact that births take place each
day. Taking into account that the infected population would have a higher death rate than
the uninfected population, we used different parameters for the death rate of the
uninfected and the infected population. We estimated an 0 R of approximately 2.9,
meaning that on an average each patient has been spreading the infection to 2.9 other
people. The values of the parameters of the model have been estimated based on available
data and numerical illustration has been carried out to describe the transmission process.

Factors affecting habitat selection by Mrs Hume’s Pheasant Syrmaticus humiae (Hume, 1881) in Mizoram, northeast India

Title: Factors affecting habitat selection by Mrs Hume’s Pheasant Syrmaticus humiae (Hume, 1881) in Mizoram, northeast India
Authors: Lalpawimawha
Abstract: Mrs Hume’s Pheasant Syrmaticus humiae (Hume, 1881) is a globally near-threatened pheasant spe-cies. It is sparsely distributed in eastern part of Mizoram, northeast India. The factors that influ-enced the habitat selection of S. humiae in the tropical montane forest are studied during January 2013 to March 2015. Based on preliminary survey a possible site of occurrence of the species was identified in the community reserved forest (CRF) adjacent to Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary (LWS), near Myanmar border. Line transects were laid on two separate sites to determine the habitat use by the species. Physical variables were recorded on each transect sampling site. Only eight sight-ings are recorded at the Pine dominated area having good ground cover of tall grasses. The data analysis by principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise logistic regressions analysis showed that litter cover and temperature plays a significant role (p<0.05) in the habitat selection by S. humiae. The possible reasons for this relationship are discussed and compared with other records.

A Case-Control Study of Alcohol Consumption and Esophageal Cancer in the Northeast State of Mizoram, India

Title: A Case-Control Study of Alcohol Consumption and Esophageal Cancer in the Northeast State of Mizoram, India
Authors: Lalpawimawha
Abstract: Summary: Esophageal cancer is one of the main health issues in Mizoram. The risk factors of the disease are
related to consumption of alcohol. There have not been any epidemiological studies on this subject in the state. The aim
of the study is to assess the relationship between esophageal cancer and consumption of alcohol.
Materials and Methods: A hospital based matched case-control study was conducted comprising of 138 cases with
histologically confirmed diagnosis of esophageal cancer and 276 controls that were cancer and esophageal cancer
disease free. Cases and controls matched by gender and age (± 5 years). Ratio of cases and controls were 1:2. A
questionnaire was used to collect information on possible risk factors of esophageal cancer. The odds ratios (OR) and
95% confidence intervals (CI) for gastric cancer were calculated by a conditional logistic regression.
Results: Cases had significantly lower education level. Most of the cases are from middle income class. After adjustment
for consumption of betel quid, tobacco, smoking, body mass index (BMI), family history of cancer, education level and
income level, higher risk of esophageal cancer was found for those who have the habit of consuming alcohol in the
morning. After controlling for consumption of betel quid, tobacco, smoking, body mass index (BMI), family history of
cancer, education level, income level, dietary habits, physical activity, consumption of Zu(locally brewed alcohol) and
both Zu(locally brewed alcohol) and commercial alcohol(rum, whisky, vodka and beer, etc) are also associated with
higher risk of esophageal cancer (O.R = 9.820, 95% CI = 2.029-47.523).
