Abstract: The history of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) in India
dates back to 1975. It was the Narasimham committee
that conceptualised the foundation of Regional
Rural Banks in India. The committee felt the need of
regionally oriented rural banks’ that would address
the problems and requirements of the rural people in
India. Regional Rural Banks were established under
the provisions of an Ordinance promulgated on the
26th September 1975 and the RRB Act, 1975 with an
objective to ensure suficient institutional credit for
agriculture and other rural sectors.
The present study was conducted with the following
major objectives:
∑ To analyse the performance of Mizoram Rural
Bank (MRB) during the study period;
∑ To highlight and analyse the comparative productivity of MRB and other RRBs.
The present study is based on secondary data. The
secondary data have been collected mainly through the
data bases of various reports published by Mizoram
Rural Bank and Regional Rural Banks. The study
is conined only to the speciic areas like number of
branches, district coverage, deposits mobilised, credits
and investments made by the Mizoram Rural Bank
(MRB) for the eleventh year’s period starting from
